As far as all reports on the phone right now, no. They haven’t put UMA on the G1 and UMA calling requires specific software. The hardware bits seem to be there (WiFi) but they didn’t add the other parts needed for it.
Its possible that they could add it at a later time, or even before launch, but the complete lack of comments from T-Mobile on this doesn’t make me too optimistic about it.
I’m in your boat only worse. I live in an area about 15 miles from any cell access, so I’m looking for UMA phone to upgrade to when my current contract is out. I was really interested in the G1 since I’m all about custom apps on my phone. However it looks like I’m going to be stuck waiting for the Blackberry Javelin (8900 if the rumor mill is correct).
In some ways that’s probably the better option for me anyway. Since I don’t live in range I DEFINITELY won’t need 3G (Javelin will be an EDGE device) so why pay for it? I use the phone to travel, no need for it at home, and when I’m travelling EDGE is “ok” for my purposes then. Not great, but cheaper, so it has its benefits.
Too bad though, I would have paid the extra to have the better gadget factor But for yours and my uses UMA conquers that.
