Difference between buying phone with contract and without?

I live in Canada and I want to buy the HTC Dream. In future shop it says that it only cost $150 with a plan and like $600 without one??? I’m confused, why does it cost more without a plan???? (By the way this is my first phone)

First of all when you sign up for a contract through a cell phone you get a discount of the cell phone because you agree to a 2 year contract with them. And if you decide to cancel your account you have to pay a early termination fee.
However if you just purchase a phone without a contract without signing up for their cell phone services then you have to pay for the phone at retail price. No discounts.
Another concern is most people want to update their phone again before their contract 2 year is over. Because the 2 year contract is not yet over, cell phone companies sell the phones at retail price like $300.00 and above. Otherwise you can wait until your contract is over and you will get another discount on another phone.

Well i will put it this way. With buying a phone with a contract, its like buying a candy bar and getting a fraction of it each month for two years. But when you buy a phone without contract, its like buying the whole candy bar and being able to do whatever you want with it. Some people buy with a contract because of many reasons, Some can’t afford buying without contract which is cheaper in the long run(pay $500 one time or over $2000 in a span of two years). I recommend, as your first phone, to buy with contract for now. Theres no reason for now to buy without contract unless you know you will hook it up with another company when unlocked. But its more when its unlocked because your not tied to having to pay monthly. If it was less than a phone with contract, you would see alot more people buy without contract.
